BYRON BAY: The Spiritual and Healing Capital of Australia

A HOLIDAY TO UNPLUG, DE-STRESS, RECHARGE AND CONNECT AGAIN WITH YOUR INNER SELF, YOUR EMOTIONAL, SPIRITUAL AND PHYSICAL WELL BEING AND MOTHER NATURE. A PLACE WHERE AUSTRALIA FIRST MEETS THE SUN. IT SOUNDS LIKE BYRON BAY WHICH HAS LONG BEEN THE SPIRITUAL AND HEALING CAPITAL OF AUSTRALIA.

Today the words ‘wellness’ and ‘vacation’ are often spoken in the same sentence and it’s little wonder.  We all seem to be consumed by the constant demands of our everyday lives and have to make a conscious effort to stop, refocus, renew, and Byron’s a pretty special place to do it.  People live here to have life-changing experiences and people visit for the same reason.

Aboriginal elders say it’s been a sacred healing ground for tens of thousands of years and undoubtedly locals and visitors alike are seduced by its indefinable magical qualities, surrounded as it is by protected areas – to the east a marine park, to the north and south nature reserves and the western boundaries are national park.  It’s a bountiful bubble of nature and has long been famous for its alternative and wholistic approach to health and well being.  It’s a magnet for healers of all kinds whether it’s in the practice of yoga, meditation, nutrition, physical activity, its myriad of ways to connect with nature and its open-armed approach to all kinds of spiritual belief systems. It’s a place that stands proudly as being different to everywhere else.

Says Bernie Leser in Traveller, “It's a little jewel under a lighthouse, where the rainforest meets the sea, where pods of dolphins frolic in turquoise waters and migratory whales breech and sigh out in the Bay, where surfers, hippies, musicians, writers, farmers, teachers, artists, film-makers, fishermen, stockbrokers, you name them; where all these and more have gathered for some great modern-day experiment in living.” And it’s the place for visitors to come to not only experience “the fine dining, smart cafés and bookshops, music, arts and literary festivals, but also the goulash of massage and alternative health therapies so diverse you could spend an entire month floating from one to the other.”

Here are some of our faves:

Crystal Castle and Shambhala Gardens where you can enjoy a meditation in the Enchanted Cave, wander through the sacred gardens full of hidden charms like the amethyst rock wall, the labyrinth and crystals, some as old as 500 million years.  Touch the World Peace Stupa (one of only seven in the world) who’s purpose is to restore balance to the earth in times of war, conflict and environmental destruction, and see the world’s tallest crystals – two 5.5metre high smoky quartz geodes from a remote location in Uruguay. It’s a destination that so perfectly combines culture, faith and spiritual awakening. And for a peek into the future? Tarot card readers are available every day.

Pick one of the many Byron Bay kayaking with dolphins tour guides (Cape Byron Kayaks is our pick)
We know that throughout time and cultures, water has been bestowed with healing powers.  Add to that the life-changing experience of getting up close and personal to bottlenose dolphins, spotting sea turtles or majestic humpback whales on their annual migration north through Byron’s ocean waters and you have an awe-inspiring and therapeutic experience of an unforgettable kind.

A massage at Comma
will soothe the soul.  A Comma holistic massage will see you ‘taking a moment to breathe, regenerate, find calm, and begin again and again.  It’s where you’ll realise that ‘amidst the clamour of life, time is your greatest currency.’   And just how true is that!

Get outside and create your own quiet meditation.  Have a swim or surf at Clarkes, Wategos or The Point, laze on the beach and watch the sunrise or set, take a hike through the lush green hinterland to Minyon Falls, ride a horse along the long stretches of sand on Seven Mile Beach or take your time to connect with the natural beauty on show on a walk to the top of Cape Byron

Yoga and Byron go hand-in-hand.  It’s a hot-spot for yoga and meditation. It’s why you can enjoy private yoga and meditation sessions in-house at any of the Byron Beach Abodes luxury holiday properties. It’s the best way for beginners to learn the foundations of yoga, or to challenge those who are seasoned practitioners.  Stretch and lengthen the yin way or flow and strengthen the yang way.  Learn to breathe correctly, meditate and importantly simply learn how to rest.  And if pampering is more your thing, indulge in an in-house face, hand and foot massage, a wellness treatment or a full-body massage

There’s a thousand ways to unplug, de-stress and recharge in Byron. Come find your way soon eh?
