THE MEZ CLUB BYRON BAY. NO MEMBERSHIP REQUIRED. JUST TASTE BUDS JUMPING AT THE PROSPECT OF SAMPLING PLATES OF THE TASTIEST MEDITERRANEAN-INSPIRED TAPAS WASHED DOWN WITH SOME OF THE PRETTIEST AND CREATIVE COCKTAILS IN TOWN. THAT'S WHAT YOU'LL FIND AT THE MEZ CLUB - BYRON'S OWN MEDITERRANEAN CANTINA AND BAR.
With floor to ceiling doors that open up to bring the outside in and make the most of balmy Byron days and nights, the architecture is all white-washed walls so typical of the Greek Islands, grill-covered windows with wooden shutters giving a nod to Morocco, and rattan pendant lights, lots and lots of cushions and leather poufs are evocative of Turkey. Yep, that says Mediterranean to us!
Seating is a mix of low and high tables as well as a private dining nook with beautifully curved seating and the outside eating deck is abundant in market brollies. Upstairs via the handsome wrought-iron-railed spiral staircase built around a soaring raw timber pole, is The Souk - a stunning mezzanine level sitting beneath a heavily beamed circular roof lined with thatch. It's a space designed especially for parties and group events and has its own dedicated cocktail bar.
The menu makes ordering easy, separated as it is into Dips and Nibbles, Meze and Dessert. It's a food journey that takes you from the noisy bazaars of Morocco in the west, to the traditional family feasts of Greece and Turkey in the East. Our first order is usually a cocktail with a side of pita bread, olive oil and mediterranean olives, and our favourite, sweet potato fries with fetta and zataar herbs. From the Meze Plates menu - we suggest 3 plates between two - our go-to's at the moment are the crispy Cypriot halloumi with pickled onion, fig balsamic, mint and a good squeeze of lemon, the Lamb Kofte balls with tzatziki and roast cherry tomatoes and the salt and pepper squid with aioli, harissa and lemon zest. And the taster board is always a great alternative with little samples of so many delicious meze classics.
The lunch menu sees the addition of some mouth-watering choices including Tunisian prawns and chorizo with shakshuka sauce, melted haloumi and served with pita bread. Or a pita pocket plate which invites you to fill your own pita bread with lemon and herb chicken, traditional lamb kofte, falafel and tahini or crispy halloumi. Yum! And we always want to squeeze in dessert but can never decide on just one option, so we order the Dessert Tasting Board and why wouldn't we when it includes Turkish Delight, halva, chocolate baclava, passionfruit malabi and pistachios!
And to drink? You'll find a great selection of reds, whites and bubbles as well as Byron's local Stone and Wood beer, but it's the cocktail menu that really shines. The Mez signature cocktails include Mez Club Margarita with tequila, mezcal, curacao, orange bitters, agave and lime, Peach Spritz with ink gin, peach liquor, riesling, vermouth bianco and citrus or the locally named Wategos At Dawn which combines rum, prosecco, angostura, mint, raspberry and lime. They've got a great selection of classics too including Mojito, Espresso Martini and our all time fav, Salted Caramel White Russian with vodka, coffee liquer, milk and caramel. And on the QT, we rarely stop at just one.
